AI in Business: The Honest Conversation

AI in Business: The Honest Conversation

In a recent conversation between Clare Hillis, Microsoft Ireland Partner Lead, and Peter Rose, Co-Founder and Group Technical Director at TEKenable, they discussed how organisations can move beyond experimentation and build a sustainable, scalable AI strategy.

How TEKenable is Helping Organisations Realise the Full Potential of AI

Artificial Intelligence has rapidly evolved from a promising innovation into a strategic business imperative. While many organisations are still exploring its potential, others are already embedding AI into the fabric of their operations to drive productivity, innovation, and competitive advantage.

Building AI Capability Before the Market Demand

For TEKenable, AI is not a recent focus area. Long before generative AI entered the mainstream, the company was already exploring machine learning technologies and applying them to real-world business challenges.

However, the arrival of large language models and tools such as ChatGPT marked a significant turning point.

“When large language models emerged, we immediately recognised the possibilities,” explained Peter Rose. “As a long-term Microsoft partner, it was a natural step for us to align with Microsoft’s AI platform and invest in building expertise early.”

Rather than waiting for market demand to catch up, TEKenable proactively established a dedicated AI team and formed a research partnership with Trinity College Dublin. Today, the company has a full-time AI researcher, focused on developing innovative AI solutions for both customers and internal operations.

Becoming Customer Zero

One of the key reasons TEKenable has become recognised as a leader in AI is its commitment to being Customer Zero, using AI extensively within its own organisation before implementing solutions for clients.

The company has rolled out Microsoft Copilot across nearly every department, while developers leverage GitHub Copilot to accelerate software development.

AI is now integrated throughout the organisation, supporting:

  • Sales and business development
  • Project management
  • Software development
  • Quality assurance and testing
  • Finance operations
  • Internal knowledge management

Beyond personal productivity tools, TEKenable has also established what Peter describes as an Agent Factory, a framework that enables the rapid development and deployment of AI agents.

“We’ve created around 20 to 30 AI agents for our own internal use so far,” he said. “The same approach allows us to quickly build and deploy agentic AI solutions for our customers.”

Achieving Microsoft’s AI Specialisation

TEKenable’s expertise has been formally recognised through Microsoft’s Advanced Specialisation in AI, making it one of the first Microsoft partners to achieve this distinction.

The accreditation is far more than a certification. To qualify, partners must undergo rigorous independent audits of multiple delivered projects, demonstrating their ability to successfully implement AI solutions that meet Microsoft’s highest standards.

“You can’t achieve this through theory alone,” Peter explained. “You need proven project delivery and real customer outcomes.”

Having recently renewed the specialisation for a second year, TEKenable continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering enterprise-grade AI solutions.

But Why Microsoft AI?

With thousands of AI tools now available on the market, choosing the right platform can be overwhelming for organisations.

For TEKenable, the decision to focus on Microsoft’s AI ecosystem comes down to one critical factor: security.

“Everything you do within Microsoft’s AI environment remains inside your organisation’s security boundary,” Peter explained.

Whether data resides in SharePoint, Microsoft 365, or other Microsoft services, organisations maintain control of their information within the same trusted environment.

This is particularly important for enterprise organisations where cybersecurity, compliance, and data governance are board-level priorities.

“That level of confidence is irreplaceable,” Peter added. “It’s one of the primary reasons we’ve chosen to build our AI solutions on the Microsoft platform.”

Why prepare for the Agentic AI Era?

As AI evolves beyond assistants and into autonomous agents capable of completing tasks and supporting business processes, organisations need to ensure the right foundations are in place.

Drawing on TEKenable’s experience, Peter highlighted three key areas organisations should focus on:

1. Establish AI Governance and Ethical Policies

Businesses must clearly define what AI can and can’t be used for, creating guardrails that ensure responsible and compliant adoption.

2. Define Digital Employee Roles

Organisations should identify where AI agents can deliver the greatest value by creating “digital employee” job descriptions and mapping responsibilities to high-impact business processes.

3. Partner with Experienced Experts

Successfully implementing AI requires more than technology alone. Working with experienced partners helps organisations accelerate adoption, reduce risk, and maximise business outcomes.

The Shift from Technology to Operating Model

For Clare Hillis, one of the most important observations emerging from AI adoption is that the conversation has fundamentally changed.

“This isn’t a technology conversation anymore,” she said. “It’s an operating model conversation.”

Success will not be determined by which organisations experiment with AI the most. Instead, the winners will be those that can successfully scale AI across their business and transform the way they operate.

“The organisations that move fastest from experimentation to enterprise-wide adoption will gain the greatest advantage,” Clare noted.

And achieving that scale requires the right strategy, governance, technology foundation, and implementation partner.

As AI continues to reshape industries, TEKenable’s approach demonstrates that lasting success comes not from chasing the latest trend, but from investing early, building expertise, and creating the foundations that allow innovation to scale securely and effectively.
