What Microsoft Copilot Is (and Is Not)
Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant built into Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform. It uses large language models, grounded in your own business data, to help users draft content, summarise records, automate tasks, and surface insights without leaving the applications they already work in.
It is not a separate product you buy and install separately. It is not a chatbot sitting outside your systems. And it is not going to replace your team. It is a layer of AI capability inside the tools your people already use, designed to reduce the time spent on repetitive tasks so they can focus on the work that requires judgement.

Dynamics 365 Sales
Summarises customer meetings and emails, suggests next best actions, drafts follow-up emails, and highlights deals at risk based on activity patterns.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
Creates and updates work orders from natural language, suggests scheduling, summarises work order history, and helps technicians resolve issues faster on-site.
Dynamics 365 Marketing
Generates email and campaign copy, builds audience segments from natural language descriptions, and suggests content variations based on past engagement.
Business Central
Generates product descriptions, predicts late payments, assists with cash flow forecasting, and helps users navigate and query financial data in plain language.
What Copilot Does Across Power Platform
Power Apps
Describe the app you want to build in plain language and Copilot generates the data model, screens, and basic logic. Significantly reduces build time for standard line-of-business apps.
Power Automate
Describe a workflow in natural language and Copilot drafts the automation flow. Useful for non-technical users who know what they want automated but not how to configure a flow.
Power BI
Ask questions of your data in plain language and get charts and summaries in response. Copilot can also generate report summaries and suggest visualisations based on the data in a report.
Copilot features are expanding continuously. What it can do today is meaningfully more than it could do 12 months ago. Any evaluation of Copilot should be based on current capability, not a 2023 feature list.
Before You Start: What Actually Matters
Copilot works best when the underlying Microsoft environment is well configured and the data it draws on is clean and well structured. A poorly set-up Dynamics 365 instance produces poor Copilot outputs, not because the AI is weak but because it is only as good as the data it can see.
The organisations getting the most value from Copilot have three things in place: a well-configured Dynamics 365 or Power Platform environment, clear use cases they are trying to address rather than a vague aspiration to “use AI”, and a review process for AI-generated outputs before they reach customers or financial records.
